Faucet supply and water heater supply size labeled as tapered
Author: DaveDIY (NJ)

Why are the 1/2 inch sink faucets supply connection labeled as 1/2 MIP, while they are straight and not tapered.
The same goes for 3/4 water heater flex pipe with rubber gasket, they labeled as 3/4 MIP but they has straight threads instead of tapered threads. Should it be 1/2 MIPS for the faucet and 3/4 FIPS for the water heater hose?

Also the water heater dielectric are tapered, so there's a tapered pipe connecting to a staight female connector with a gasket seal.

It’s because there is a rubber seal that the flexes do not have to be tapered

Any tapered fitting is designed to be joined directly to a tapered pipe using thread sealant instead of a rubber gasket or washer

ditto

the labeling is not the best - it will FIT (with a gasket for a seal) ONTO 1/2 & 3/4

WE, being in the trade, KNOW what fits together, so we do not worry about the labeling. In face, I never even checked how the various items were labeled as far as threads were concerned.

Thanks. I though I was using the wrong ones for the last 40 years on 30+water heaters.
