The screw that holds the gasket in place on the end of the diverter stem is lodged in the manifest piping. How do I remove it.

If I interpret the word 'lodged' correctly and you are (apparently) not mechanically inclined it is probably cheaper and easier to simply purchase a new stem and use a hacksaw to remove the old.
OR
spray with liquid wrench and wait overnight
then
try again

a removable seat has either a square or a hexagonal hole
example:
if, however, your seat has a ROUND hole then you are screwed - pun intended

No the screw is in the way.
When looking in pipe I'm looking at the threads. So my tapered faucet seat wrench is ineffective.

i would move the screw sideways and take an small old chisel and tap it in a few times. make a really good groove in the seat.
then take the chisel and heat it nice and hot. push it into the grove and repeat the heating operation.
you are trying to get the seat so hot loosens what ever sealer the factory put on it when originally installing it.
see in that works ?
if not you can drill into the center to see if you can remove enough of the seat and screw that you can fashion another home made tool and remove the sweat.
don't worry about and tiny pieces of brass caused by drilling, they will flush out when you turn the water on with no stem in place.
