Static head pressure on ABS DWV pipes and connectors
Author: john5788 (CA)

Hello,

I am doing the rough plumbing for my 2 story home addition as a DIY and had a question regarding the 10 foot head water test.

I understand that the ABS DWV pipe is not rated for pressure. 10 foot head of water exerts 4.33 psi at the bottom. If I were to test my addition's drainage and venting system, the top of the vent would be at the roof which is 22 feet above the ground, approximately 9.52 psi of water pressure at the plugged test tee.

Is this acceptable pressure for the black ABS DWV pipe? At what point is the water column pressure too great for this kind of pipe since it's not rated for pressure? 30 feet / 12.99psi? 40 feet / 17.32 psi?

We always did it. If we hat to go even higher, then we closed off the lower level and tested the upper sections.
