Sink in kitchen is slow draining
Author: theoldbat (SC)

we have a dw. water filling both sides of kitchen sink. it also filled dw. would slow drain. cleaned out u joint and snaked from kitchen to main line. snaked down the vent on the roof, which is near the kitchen. snaked about 150ft or so. felt a little something and it cleared. ran cold water down drain. sink didnt fill. checked shower, tub and both bathroom sinks. nothing was filling (and they never filled bef the snaking). checked cleanout at sewer connection while water running. it had a flow, not a trickle.

next day, sink is slow draining. what do i need to do now?

if you sent down 150ft of snake, that's quite long. What kind and size head did you use?

how quick does the sink back up to a standstill? seconds or minutes? that usually tell you how far down the blockage is.

you could have also used too small a head and instead of clearing the pipe you merely poked a hole through a blob of greasy soft blockage. That soft blockage then moved and shifted and the blockage reformed further downstream.

your dishwasher should not be filled up...do you have an air gap or at least a high loop under the sink cabinet?

The very first test that should be done to determine if a sink is blocked is to fill up the sink (both, if a double sink) and pull the stopper(s). That should tell you if there is a blockage.

no gap and no loop. houses werent built with those back in the day. hubby can put in a gap. only other time that happened, it was the garb disposal's fault. got rid of that. tyty

ty for the helps. hubby went out and got a roto snake and we heard the glug glug. smiling smiley not a clue as to what it could be. no kids in the house, no grease down the drain and only 1ply tp down the toilets. maybe a sock from the washer?

he will install the gap soon.

the 'gap' will prevent the dishwasher from backflooding from a stoppage but will NOT cure nor create the stoppage itself

however

there is a 'duckbill' check in the dishwasher pump discharge piping which often becomes 'clogged open' which 'should' prevent backflow into the dw
