 Tapping Sound In Pipes
Author: RLT (FL)

I live in a 45 year old condo and recently replaced HVAC and Water Heater within last six months. Previously a few years before that replaced kitchen faucet and dishwasher. Between those installations I have a tapping sound coming from a pipe between those four items as they are only about six to eight feet from each other. The tapping comes and goes and can last upwards sometimes 15 minutes to two or three hours. It goes about two to three taps a second tap tap tap tap tap tap. My plumber said it is not coming from the new water heater he just installed. I have done everything from flushing toilets, running faucets, opening water heater relief valve etc. nothing seems to work. It stops when it wants to stop HELP driving me crazy.
Thanks,
RLT

usually this kind of noise is caused by a hot water pipe expanding and then it stops when the pipe contracts.

Also when HOT water is draining the ABS pipe will expand and will pop if there is no clearance around the pipe. Trust me I've seen it many times.
