How to fix a burst copper pipe
Author: webables (AK)

I've got a 3/4" copper pipe that burst from a freeze. I have the water line shut off and now I need to fix the burst section.

I've been able to find articles from local plumbing companies but none of them are specific when they say "replace the section of pipe". It's pretty obvious to me it needs to be replaced, but how? It's one unanimous section of pipe.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

generally:

cut out the 'burst' section

replace with a new piece using two (preferably solder) couplings

However, if it froze, it is probably "expanded/oversized" so you may need a swadge to resize it.

Hj is right the copper pipe while bursting also swelled so finding a section of pipe not affected will be difficult I’ve also used an adjustable pipe wrench to resize the copper it’s doable but maybe better off left to experienced hands if you find a good section to connect to I’d use pex because of its ability to expand without bursting

The best way to repair a burst section of 3/4" copper pipe is to cut out the damaged section and replace it with a new section. You will need a copper pipe cutter, a pipe reamer, and some replacement pipe. To begin, start by shutting off the water supply to the pipe. Then, use the pipe cutter to cut out the damaged section of pipe. Make sure the edges are clean and free of any burrs. Next, use the pipe reamer to deburr the edges and make sure that they are smooth. Finally, take the replacement pipe and join it to the existing pipe with copper fittings. Use a propane torch to solder the joints together, ensuring that they are properly sealed.

The trick is to find two places on either side of the burst that is still in original size copper that has not been expanded during the freeze.

Use an adjustable wrench and a short piece of good copper adjust it to that size of the copper OD, then working from the burst section outward use the adjustable wrench to locate two points where the wrench finds the same OD and rounded. That's where you need to cut and patch in a new section of copper.
