Old pfister - price two handled shower valve still leaks after new seats and gaskets.

Not sure what else can be causing the leak.

Two weeks ago I put in new gaskets and the leak stopped.

Today I pulled it all out and replaced both seats. The cold seat was corroded and stripped by the prior homeowner, but came out with a #7 extractor, the seat threads were not damaged on inspection, but I still have a leak at the shower head, cold water, after replacing both seats, gaskets and valves. The leak is more than a drip, but not so much I can't stop it by turning off the valve at the shower head.

sometimes with an older valve the threads for the new seat need a little help. yeah, it can leak thru that thread.
take the seat out and put a small dab of pipe dope on the male threads and try again.

Find a "good" plumber, and ask him if he knows how to convert your valve to a "lifetime ceramic seal 1/4 turn valve". If he does that will eliminate your need for the seats, their threads, and washers. He will probably also have to change the trim and handles, but this will cure your problem "forever". If he doesn't call someone else until you DO find someone who can do it.

You are probably right. When I finally got the seat out, it looked like it had been put in with loctite red, but I thought, "that would be insane". Do plumbers ever retap and go up to a bigger seat? I examined the treads for damage, since I used an extractor and they were pristine, even though the seat threads were flattened and full of red filler. Not that you would know, but will pipe sealant be enough? I could use loctite blue or a dab of silicone sealant.

If you don't do as hj suggests but use something on the threads to make the seats difficult/impossible to remove you should use Monel seats. That valve is very popular and stems and trim will be around longer than you are.

you can use a couple of wraps of teflon tape.
if it all works it will be fine for a number of years. then.. think about a conversion.
