small leak in pvc pipe joint
Author: mbrown (AL)

I have a very small leak in a 1/2 inch pvc pipe joint. I am seeking advice to fix it without cutting and replacing the pipe...very hard spot to work in. I have been told many ways to 'repair' this issue and would like this forum's experience if any of the ideas really work.

1. Dry very well, apply pvc primer, apply pvc cement.
2. Same as above and also wrap with teflon tape, then wrap on top with duct or electrical tape.
3. Cover joint with plumber's putty.
4. Cover joint with silicone tape.

This pipe is in my horse barn on an inside wall, insulated with wrap foam and is water supply to hot water heater. Have had temps in teens for couple of days.

Thanks much for any input!

'fix' 1-4 will only be temporary at best

there is NO 'permanent' external repair for a pressurized PVC joint other than replacement

if you have the clearance to apply 'self melding' tape or another 'patch' then you have the clearance to replace the joint

yeah, given the availibility and wide varity of sharkbite fittings, it seems silly to try a questionable fix.
just cut out a few inches and use sharkbites to replace.

Agreed, none of those “temporary” fixes would work on a pressurized line anyway

If you have the room for it an oscillating tool works great for cutting the pipe without cracking the entire length
