Internal Workings of Moen Motion Sense Kitchen Faucets
Author: george 7941 (Canada)

I have installed these for customers but have not had to repair them yet, so I have not taken one apart. It uses the usual 1255 cartridge.

Here are the installation instructions, it has diagrams of the components
[images.homedepot.ca]

There is only one inlet hose to the actual faucet, so the temperature is actually set by the control unit, not directly by the 1255 cartridge. The hot and cold water supply hoses come into the control unit, not the faucet body.
There is a data cable running from the faucet body to the control unit. My best guess is that the rotation of the faucet handle is registered by an encoder and transmitted to the control unit over the data cable, so that the control unit knows the proportion of hot water to cold water to let in.

Anyone with insight on this motion sense mechanism?

They do not use a 1255 cartridge. A Moen parts breakdown for a Motionsense I see, states cartridge is not available and not a serviceable part.

I googled MOEN MOTION SENSE CARTRIDGE REPLACEMENT and ended up with this video. Not only does the title say Motion Sense but the spout has a small window which looks like the sensing port. This video is why I assumed they used the 1255.

At another site posts about replacing the 1255 in a Motion Sense. This was in 2014 and this must have been an older generation of Motion Sense. They have the sensing port in the front and not the side, and have the port on the spout and not the faucet body

Conclusion - The older Motion Sense used the 1255 and the newer ones do not. The older ones had the hot and cold supply coming into the faucet body.
