I live in 43 year old home. Bought new clothes washer. When they came in to install it they said they could not connect it because of the way the drainage was plumbed. The previous washer drainage pipe was hooked into a 2 inch pvc pipe loacated about the height of top of washer going up about two feet then elbows into horizontal 2 inch pipe. Just past past the elbow is a short green plastic attachment in line that has arrows on it indication flow only one way. This is coupled to 2.5 inchpipe that goes about 2.5 feet then Y's into 4 inch pvc pipe which goes down two feet and hooksinto what I believe is the main sewer line. We have used previous washer for 16 years and have not seemed to have any problems. It is in a basement.
Is this problem?

sounds like you have no trap nor vent.
the green check valve is keeping bad odors from coming back into the basement.
get us a picture so we can tell for sure what you have.

Looks like there was a pump there, pumping up the discharge from the washing machine.

My guess is we're looking at backside of sink set up. Gray corrugated drain hose connects to washer this side of wall,goes thru and pumps into sink. Green check keeps black water out of sink.Looks like stainless flex hot and cold coiled up way down low. That pipe in lower right of photo running up at angle I bet comes from sump pump set up looking at that check valve and the power cord

The gray hose is not actually connected to anything at this point. the previous washer connection is at the bottom of the white PVC piping in between the hot and cold water lines

You MUST, repeat MUST, drain a washer INDIRECTLY into either a standpipe and a trap or a sink (with a trap) for gravity flow
OR
through an air break into a 'sump pump' type of receptor.
It may NOT, repeat NOT, be connected directly into the sanitary plumbing system regardless of check valves or other mechanical backflow prevention devices.
You were simply lucky as heck with the previous ABORTION.
Get a LICENSED BONDED INSURED plumber.
