I want a wall-mount tub faucet that has a diverter for the shower directly on it, to attach to a hand-held shower head - no fixed shower head. It's for an alcove tub, and most of the faucets like this are made for clawfoot. I don't see why I can't use them.
While window-shopping I encountered some Modona faucets that look nice. The separation is 6" - a standard size in Europe, so a reviewer noted. I haven't plumbed it yet, so I can make it anything I like. But the unhappy reviewer, who couldn't get his to work, had to open up the wall and change the plumbing to use a 'normal' fixture. (though there are some Kingstons that have adjustable centers that would work).
Am I recruiting future problems by using an unusual fixture? One very unhappy reviewer wrote that the inspector in Massachusetts wouldn't allow it - why would Big Home Store sell a fixture that the state wouldn't allow?

MA code says a handheld must be considered a shower so it must be non-scald.
you can put a mixing/tempering valve somewhere in line so the handheld will not produce water hotter than 109-112 F.
next point is the length of the hose.
if the hand held end can be submerged in a tubful of water then you must provide backflow protection. the little chrome backflow device that screws onto the top end of the hose is (usually) sufficient for this.
other than that there should be no reason to not install one.

Thanks. A guy wrote to Big Home Store:
'The unit is not approved for use in Massachusetts. I reached out to the manufacturer to see if they had any approval certificates but they never got back to me. MA state website does not it listed as approved. Plumbing inspector failed the rough inspection for using a device not approved in Massachusetts. Why would [Big Home Store] sell products in MA that can’t be installed in MA? Why isn’t there a disclaimer to confirm it is approved for MA use before you buy it????'
Did the inspector give him a hard time unfairly? As near as I know, my state has no list of approved parts. Besides, there'll be no inspection.

MA does have a list of approved products for plumbing. it is nothing but a big money maker for the state.
the approvals must be renewed from year to year. the approval involves payment of a fee.
