 My waterheater
Author: MsButtercup (IL)

Recently I had to replace my water heater,
Unfortunately it has no rod. We'll now we
have a terrible oder. What can I do
If anything... or is it possible
To maybe make it to where it has one.
Or be able to trade it somewhere for one
that does. This has turned into an
Expensive lesson forsure but I've never
had to shop around for water heaters.
I appreciate your help, please tell me
There's something I can do and that I didn't
waste my money on this water heater...

Thx so much

anode rods don't stop odor in your hot water.

they attract corrosives so they heater lasts longer.

It DOES have an anode rod. You need to read the manual.

probably a magnesium one

you could switch it for an aluminum alloy one

IF you did not have a rod, it would probably be because it is all plastic and does not need one. But rods do not PREVENT odors, they cause them.

A magnesium rod offers the best protection, but can react with minerals in hard water. This causes a rotten egg smell. Try replacing rod with an aluminum/zinc rod. It will last longer in hard water and should not give water objectionable odor. When replacing the rod, make sure to fully drain and flush the hot water heater, to remove all magnesium residue.

Certain water conditions will cause a reaction with magnesium or aluminum anode rods to produce a "rotten egg" smell. By replacing the magnesium or aluminum anode rod with a combination aluminum/zinc/tin anode rod you may help decrease this smell, but it may not eliminate it completely.

The result is a rotten egg odor. Try substituting a rod made of aluminum and zinc. In hard water, it will stay longer and shouldn't impart an unpleasant odor to the water. Make sure to completely empty and flush the hot water heater before replacing the rod to get rid of any remaining magnesium. Thanks
