 GE disposer
Author: sum (FL)

I have a GE MODEL GFC530F disposer at a rental. The disposer runs, but sounds louder than I remember, and when I turned the switch to the disposer off, it winds down but comes to a sudden halt, as if someone just stepped on the brakes.

I removed the splash guard and looked in with a flashlight, no sign of any jam.

I reached in with my hand and slowly turned it inside and it turned fine.

The tenant rarely use the disposer and I just noticed it by turning it on and off during routine maintenance visits (change AC filters, test smoke alarms, bleach AC condensate drain line, exercise stop valves, test WH T&P valve etc...)

Don't know if there is something small jammed, or if it's just getting old. I know it was there in 2012 when I bought the property. So at least ten years old.

I am familiar with Insinkerator disposers they are fairly easy to change out to another one. I have never changed out a GE one. Is it as easy? I wonder if I should switch to an insinkerator disposer just so it's easier for me to maintain the same kind of disposer. But to do that I will have to change out the drain mounting flange as well. I don't think I can mount an insinkerator disposer onto a GE mounting flange right? Even though they kind of look similar (to me).

i'd stay with the one you have. GE..
it is not so much the mounting flange as it is lining up the disposer 90 from one brand to another.
you got 10 years of tenant use so it must be a decent machine.
