 Angle stop valve for PEX
Author: KatDIY (FL)

I'm renovating a small bath after a recent whole house re-pipe using 1/2" PEX. I want to use decorative supply valves/drain but confused with all the options for the angle stop valve - 1/2"IPS, 1/2" nom, 1/2" compression. I know my output is 3/8"OD based on my faucet. Any help is appreciated!confused

Has the wall covering been installed or are the pipes still accessible?

It has been installed and the lines have stop valves on it but they are inexpensive full turn chrome ones.

Is a stiffener needed inside the PEX for compression connections?

Interesting! That 5/8"OD wasn't even on my radar since the PEX was 1/2". So this vs. the 1/2"IPS:

I had no idea compression valves could be used with pex…

I’m not sure that is correct unless like sum said a stiffener and plastic ferrule are used as well

That is what I thought too. And the vendors selling the products have no idea. I've even tried to reach out to Pex and they said they don't offer technical advice. That's why I turned to this forum to try and get a solid direction before I make a costly purchase that is wrong. Thanks for taking the time to comment!

I would use an adaptor so you can come through the drywall with copper, if it were me.

5/8 in. O.D. Plastic Delrin Compression Sleeve
Pack of 10
Works with copper, brass, aluminum, PEX, Polybutylene and Polyethylene tubing,
if used with Polybutylene or Polyethylene requires insert stiffener.

Thanks for the thought. You inspired me to learn about transition adapters for Pex. Seems that it the way to go-you can adapt pex into a wide variety of applications.

Sum, the "stiffeners" aren't in the plumbing aisle.....

i have installed hundreds and hundreds of compression stops onto pex. EVERY one has a brass compression sleeve with a stainless stiffener.
there is absolutely, positvely no problem with the connection.
use a deep bell shaped flange against the wall for a nice clean looking finish.

good to know

but

i, personally, will stay with Cu and a male adapter, and a bell escutcheon if needed for 'show'

my preference..
no male adapter needed.
just slip on a compression stop.
i was meerly pointing out that compression and pex are compatible.

agree 100% with the transition 'device' from PEX to Cu

still like a threaded stop

NEVER a need for a 'ring puller'

@ packy:

from a web search 'angle stop for pex' there evidently ARE specialty stops for pex which do NOT require crimping as the 'crimper' is built in like a compression nut

these stops have a pex 'barb' and install just like compression but do NOT depend on the compression ring/ferrule 'biting into the tube'

bern...
those are special split rings used on radiant manifold outlets.
the nice thing about them is they are re-usable.
they require special barbed fittings to slip the pex over.

What’s up with all the compression talk is everyone really not sweating valves on for toilets anymore a sweat valve with a bell escutcheon looks best and no removal tool required when it comes time for replacing
