Our house is from 1950 and the cast iron drain pipe is rusted out and started to leak. It is right where the pipe comes out of the concrete blocks. When I touch the bottom of the pipe it crumbles like paper and I have two pen sized holes now. It's only water from the kitchen and my sump pump that use this pipe, so no pressure (except the sump pump seems to push water out kind of hard)

Question, could I build frame around the pipe with pieces of 2x4 and then fill the whole area with hydraulic cement so there's 1.5 inch "ring" around the sewer pipe to stop any leaks? Will hydraulic cement stick to cast iron pipe?

Your C.I. pipe has served you well throughout its expected service life.

It now needs replacement or, if you are VERY fortuneate, a local proper repair.

Time for a licensed bonded insured plumber who 'should' begin the job with a 'camera inspection' of the pipe's interior to ascertain the scope of work required.

what size pipe is this?
how far underground is it?
if you want a temporary repair then one of the 'flex seal' products (as seen on tv) would be a better solution. you will have to fix it right some day.

I’m with packy you can temporarily patch it with flex seal

I have been successful in the past rubbing about an inch of hydraulic cement on the affected cast iron

what a waste of time - except for a temporary 'patch' (NOT, repeat NOT, a repair) while awaiting the actual plumber

I think I get your message.

It is true, I am worried about what the rest of the pipe looks like, it could be rusted further into the wall and leaking water in to my foundation.

Thank you for the Flex seal suggestion. I thought about it but wasn't sure if I could get the pipe and wall clean enough, lots of old paint, rust and goo.

I'll keep it in mind depending on how much the plumber wants to fix it.

Only gray water, no sewage. If he can get away with Flex Seal for a few months or a year, why not? You love to tell everybody to call a licensed plumber, but the fact is that not everybody has a few large sitting around to cover unexpected repairs like this, especially in today's economy. Yes, eventually the pipe will need to be replaced.

if one can not afford a home along with its MAJOR and EXPECTED expenses .......................


ps. it becomes raw sewage upon any (EXPECTED EVENTUALLY) stoppage
