I’ve removed the drain boot or flange from the tub drain. Before inserting a new one I noticed there are no threads on the pipe coming into the tub. It looks like there might be a piece of pvc instead. If so, is this ok? Does it need removed? If so how? And will there be threads once it’s removed??

For some reason there is a plastic piece inside. What would you advise? Try to chisel it out but I’m not sure what’s behind it. Or just apply enough putty to create a tight seal?

It looks like the flange was sawn off the threaded section(black plastic) of the flange assembly. That black piece needs to be removed from the white plastic shoe.

That’s what I thought but I’m afraid of what I’ll find under it. I assume I’ll have to find some type of adapter piece for the new drain.

You need to either remove the black plastic piece or replace the shoe.

To me this piece you just removed and the top flange was one piece and somehow it was broken off. Did you use a chisel or something flat to pry up on the flange to get it to break off? I hope your using a flat head and hammer didn't mutilate the drain shoe threads too much to make a new strainer basket insertion difficult. Good luck.
