Completion of gas feed to utility room
Author: Zhetoman (OK)

Question: Is it permissible to run the gas line behind the power conduit, then along the wall to an existing hole for an abandoned conduit?

My research reveals most say adjacent to power conduit above ground is okay but below ground is not okay. If I go underground from the meter to the hole for the abandoned conduit, I would likely encounter the power conduit below ground.

The only other option would be to run on the surface of the ground. That is behind shrubs in a flower bed with 0 foot traffic. Still, that doesn't seem like a good option either.

Suggestions/comments.

running behind the conduit is fine.
just paint the pipe and fittings to prevent rust.
also place a sleeve in the hole in the brick for the gas pipe to go thru.

Black iron pipe is not for outdoor use you should use true galvanized pipe

I read in many places that galvanized pipe can react with NG and can flake off. Then it can clog orifices. Also read it is specifically prohibited in many places.

The Uniform Plumbing Code allows galvanized pipe to be used with Natural gas.

You just have to prime and paint the black pipe. It will rust over in 1 day. Sometimes plumber's are painters too.

Most of your existing gas lines are what looks to be galvanized, not painted or lack there of

Around here the final say goes to local gas company and they say no galvanized underground but outdoors above ground must be galvanized… they also approve the use of mega press fittings for both indoor and out

Checked with a local plumber here: Galvanized not allowed. Gas lines must be black pipe only, except for CSST with tracer wire underground.

All pre-existing gas lines are painted gray. On my newly added line, the fittings have rusted by the pipe has not.
