 Smart Move or Not?
Author: Mickel

Good Afternoon:

I want to dig a trench for a plastic water line from my pump house to my barn. I also want to add an electric line from the same locations. Is it a smart move to put BOTH the water line and electric line in the same trench to save trencher costs?

Yes, BUT, there are requirements involving horizontal and vertical spacing and further requirements regarding LABELING.

You will need a permit for this work anyway - ask the local building department.

I think part of the answer depends on the electrical raceway. Is it a burial rated cable or is it a sch80 PVC conduit? Also minimum burial depths for each.

Whatever you do, draw the location of the buried pipes, and add the locations of any other buried utilities you are 100% certain of the location. Laminate the drawing, and permanently attach it to the pump enclosure or other location nearby.

Over the last 10 years, I've helped 4 friends try to track down various buried pipes from 40-80 years ago. They discovered many creative pipe layouts underground, both abandoned and active.
