Dirt/sediment in bottom of toilet tank
Author: ericsarratt (NC)

When I recently replaced a toilet flush valve for a customer the inside of the tank had quite a bit of dirt/sediment in the bottom. The dirt has coated the inside of the toilet bowl.

The homeowner said that the dirt in the tank and the bowl is not normal. The home is about 30 years old.

They are on a well.

Your thoughts.

The dirt is at the bottom of the overflow valve (the darker area). It is about 2 tablespoons of dirt.

Having it in the bowl is a little excessive every toilet I’ve seen has sediment/mineral deposits in the tank after awhile

Being on a well can mean a bigger issue than just mineral deposits and because it looks rusty brown there could be an issue with the well itself

Does the sediment feel soft or stiff?

It felt like sandy, dirt. It was pretty granular. I don't remember it being soft or clayey. It looked like the red dirt we have around here with some shiny flecks (mica?) in it.

It did not look like flecks of rust.

The water lines are some pvc before the pressure tank and then all copper.

The sediment is only in one toilet, at the front of the house. The sediment is not in the toilet at the back of the house; I looked in the tank and in the bowl.
