 Moen 1225 spacer
Author: george 7941 (Canada)

Without the spacer the knob/handle will not bottom the cartridge out and thus shut the water off completely in some applications. The handle bottoms out against something (valve body or trim) before the cartridge is fully pushed in.

What I find puzzling is why Moen did not modify the handle to not bottom out instead of coming up with this extra part, the spacer.

The "spacer" is to prevent the stem from going so far into the handle that it cracks it.

Thanks, hj.

The stem has flats on it and the handle will get stopped at the end of the flats. I suppose the bearing surface at the end of the flats is not as large as the spacer, so it is less effective at preventing stress on the handle.
