 Toilet tank lever nut

Why is this nut threaded backwards? I mean you have to turn it clockwise to loosen.

On a standard left side lever, the action of pushing down the lever puts rotational force on the through-tank retainer. A right hand thread would allow the retainer to loosen. Same sort of thing with power saws. Depending on which side of the blade the drive is on, the threads might be left handed.

Ah I see what you are saying steve, but aren't most levers usable for left or right both, especially those "universal" levers?

The right hand is a specialized use and The nut just has to be tightened more.

Fun fact: the lug nuts on the driver's side wheels on classic Mopars had left-hand threads so that the rotational force of the wheels would tend to tighten the nuts rather than loosen them. My first car was a 1970 Fury and it was fun watching the garage guys that didn't know this try to get the wheels off!

Bern, I remember that one! Kia's new EV6 doesn't have the plug behind an actual tail light but in a tallight-shaped panel right below it....

Don,

i will divulge my embarrassing story re: '51 cadi gas cap

i operated a (leased) shell service station in '69

i bought the cadi 'off the street' for $80 from the original owner because it was smoking white when started up

changed the head gasket - smoke was gone

new tires

new carb

tune up

changed fluids (including the oil in the oil bath engine air filter)

found an actual OEM glass windshield washer reservoir bottle

cleaned interior professionally

got plates

that was the ENTIRE 'restore to new condition'

drove it around

needed gas FAR from 'home'

pulled into a local station

NO-ONE could find the filler (remember : I was a service station operator) !

an 'old timer' came around and busted his gut laughing at all of us 'youngsters' but showed us the filler

grinning smiley
