These are neoprene connectors with 2 tubing clamps, no steel shield. The label reads, 'Cast iron, Plastic' (the materials it can connect) and 'For sewer and drain use only.' Does this mean any use other than supply? Can I use it to connect a PVC pipe to an ABS pipe in house drain plumbing? Or do I need to use the model with the steel shield?

Only the shielded couplings are approved above ground. Connecting PVC to ABS is not a problem.

It’s better to just glue the pvc fitting to the abs pipe using pvc to abs glue or multi purpose glue

Transition cement is, as near as I can tell, not UPC but is allowed in some local codes; The label on the bottles of Oatey transition cement so read. New Mexico's code reads, 'A solvent cement transition joint between ABS and PVC building drain or building sewer shall be made using a listed transition solvent cement.'

If by 'multi purpose glue' you mean the cements that work on both ABS and PVC - they aren't for bonding ABS to PVC.

I suspect you're right, but I haven't found documentation of this rule. Can you point me to it please?

Our gas utility used to ALWAYS use a transition glue to connect ABS to PVC so if they could use it for gas pressure lines, I would imagine drain lines are no problem.

Just because it's good doesn't mean it's allowed. I saw a video by a home inspector who argued that it's never allowed to cement ABS to PVC, cited the code. He pointed out that the code permitted 'allowed' methods but nowhere was any transition cement allowed. Then he bonded PVC to PVC, ABS to ABS, and PVC to ABS, found the PVC-ABS bond stronger than PVC-PVC, so he didn't think it was a problem, but that he'd mention it on a report.

I would not trust the gray color neoprene connectors, where I saw them used a lot is under the sink where it transitions from the tubular outlet of a trap to the SCH40 elbow out of the wall where there is an alignment issue, and they didn't use a trap adapter. Often times there is a small offset causing the neoprene to be twisted. I would use a trap adapter instead. If it's connecting same size piping with same ID I would use the PROFLEX connectors if above ground.
