Toilet flush lever to flapper chain
Author: sum (FL)

So I got a call from a tenant saying the toilet is running.

Got there and found the chain attached to the flush lever on one side and the flapper on the other end is caught under the flapper, preventing the flapper from closing completely, and thus the water level doesn't rise to shut off the fill valve.

This happens oh once every 3-4 times when flushed.

So I shortened the chain and that solved the problem, easy 5 minute remedy.

The only thing is, if the chain was too long, it would have caught the flapper once or twice a month you would think, but it hasn't. The tenant has been there over 2 years and didn't complain about running water before. Now it happens suddenly, why?

What can cause a chain that was too long to begin with to work fine without a hitch for several years then suddenly one day it settles the wrong way under a flapper and then it happens with more regularity? That makes no sense to me I am missing something here

Time for a new flapper.

The rubber/plastic has 'deteriorated' and changed shape.

Trust me on this.

Been there, done that.
