 Leaking Stop High Tank Toilet
Author: kwp (GA)

The shutoff valve for my High Tank Toilet leaks from the stem when I try to shut it off. I was going to replace the fill valve which has been sticking. By turning the stop back on the leak stopped. Can this stop be repaired with a bonnet washer or packing? If not, does this look like a 1/2 FIP x 3/8 Compression stop? Not sure what to order. Originally from Strom Plumbing 30 plus years ago. Many thanks, KWP

the valve can be repacked very easily.
once you put it in the closed position, if the valve is indeed stopping the flow, then the packing nut can be backed off and by holding a big towel under it the water coming from it will stop. look for a couple of videos on how to repack a valve stem.

Have you tried tightening the packing nut?

Thank you for your suggestion, Steve. No, I have not tried tightening the packing nut, but that will be my first action. When it started leaking, I just turned it back on to a position that didn't leak.

Many thanks,
KWP

Your type of stem has to be closed all the way or open all the way to not leak

Thank you, Lorensr. I was not aware of that, and haven't seen it mentioned in repair videos. I appreciate the information, as I have had stops leak momentarily when turning them off or on.

Many thanks,
KWP
