Hi, I have a 45yr old cast iron ptrap for shower that I would like to permanently cap. I would then cement over it.
Attached is photo. I decided the shower is a luxury not needed going forward.
This ptrap is bonded to a main line drain (black iron, circled). They were leaned together when first concrete pour in the 70’s. The damp clay chemical reactions over time seem to bond them very well. I’m afraid to attempt to break them apart lest I somehow crack the main line pipe (circled).
The vertical stub is seated in a rubber fitting. One possibility is drill out rubber fitting and remove the 6 inch vertical stub pipe. Then what? Refit with fresh rubber fitting and use pvc/abs with a glued cap. The 6 inch stub has 2 inch O.D. The top of the ptrap is flush with underside of 4inch thick concrete. Thanks for your help! Carl.

Clean the outside of the pipe and install a cap on it.

That looks like a push-gasket of some type going into the first hub. I would wedge that out and remove the water in the trap... tightly push down some paper towels until they hit the bottom of the trap, leave a good 4 inches without paper towel, mix up some hydraulic cement and pour it in... will seal it up for a few hundred years.

Remember Cast Iron rusts and cracks. Don't put a cap on until the expanding concrete dries completely.

Will this area be finished after you cement it over? Is it in a basement?

Is there any merit to repurpose this as a floor drain, or to remove the p-trap and make it into a cleanout?

I have a floor drain. It will become a storage/closet. Thanks!
