Kohler flap overflow

We have a 20 yr old Kohler Tea for Two cast iron tub. The drain needs snaked for hair. The overflow has a chrome flap which sets flush to the tub surface. You lift up about 30 degrees to raise the stopper. The flap doesn't lift up enough for us to access the screws that keep the lift rod in without seriously denting the chrome plate. I believe the drain assembly is the K-7169-AF. How is this suppose to be taken out without damaging the chrome flap?

I'm sorry about the confusion but the problem is we can't figure out how to get the chrome flap up or the screws that hold the assembly in out and not damage the flap. We have an exploded picture. It shows two screw under the flap which hold the assembly in but we can't figure out how to get access to the screws and the flap doesn't raise up enough, even for a offset screwdriver.
