 Washing machine drain
Author: Help_please (VA)

I am trying to get a new washing machine installed in an old home with a too small drain pipe. But I cannot remove the old drain hose, and the installer says that I have to use a new hose. A picture is attached here
[ibb.co].
I cannot get the old hose out because it hits the top of that box. It is about 5-6 down in that pipe. I tried to see if the pipe would unscrew, but no luck. Do you have any ideas for getting the old hose out and a new one in?

I had a call just like this about six months ago.
I could not with all my strength remove the washer drain hose from the stand pipe.

I had to open the wall and cut the standpipe.

I found that some super form of adhesive / caulking was put onto the drain hose and it fused to the drain pipe.

I used a no hub coupling, and short section of piping to make the repair. Fairly easy task.

For your situation the pipe in the photo is bendable so you pull up and bend it away from the washer box top.
Might take some strength to do this.

does the old hose move up and down in the copper drain?
if it does then take it out in pieces and deal with the new hose when you have access.

the OP's BIG issue (pun intended) will be the size of the old drain with the 'new improved' HE washer

well, the OP will not know until the old hose is out of the pipe.

the new hoses do seem to have a smaller OD.
