 Shower Cartridge/Stem/Valve Issue
Author: PlumbingTrouble (CA)

My parent's house is having some issues with leaking in the shower. I'm not sure what the proper term is for this piece, I keep seeing it called a cartridge, stem, broach, and valve.

The part that connected to the knob had been destroyed over the years and when I went to a local hardware place they suggested this as a replacement.

It seemed to work for a bit, but now the hot water side is leaking. I tried to take them out the same way I did the old ones, but it seemed like both were stuck, and only the inner portion came out. I'm a little panicked cause I can't afford to update the shower (it's got two handles which seems to no longer be a thing.)

Any tips on what I can do? And does that look like the right replacement? They told me they believed it was Pfister Price (Price Pfister) but this was a Repcal if I remember right.

Thank you for any help!

If the seat is bad the valve can work until the washer is cut up. With Repcal the seat could be threaded in, pressed in or just machined into the faucet body and not replaceable. If the hole in the center of the seat is square, hex or has screwdriver slots then it is removable. If the hole is round then the seat was machined into the body. Sometimes a beveled washer will hit a different spot on the seat than a flat one and last longer.

I installed it and there was no leaking. Within 6 months the knobs were completely worn down and no longer turning the stem. I've had to resort to using pliers to turn the hot and cold water on.

I believe they were meant to be replaceable since I was able to initially remove and replace. I am concerned it might be the seats. I did try to take those out and replace using a seat wrench but that didn't work at all.

The house was constructed in the 50s in Southern California, I don't believe the shower was ever updated.

I wonder if this might be the problem. I think when it warms up a little, I'll give changing the seat a chance again if I can get the shower cartridge out.
