Hi all,

I just used a fernco rubber coupling to attach two ends of a 3 inch triple wall solid drain pipe (HDPE). How important is it that the two ends of the 3 inch drainage pipe butt right up against each other within the coupling? Due to a poor measurement, I’d estimate that I have an approximate gap of 1 inch in the two sections of pipe. The coupling more than covers the gap and I’m not worried about a belly because the whole assembly is underground on a foundation of 3/4 inch drainage rock.

the pipe ends do NOT butt up against each other

the pipe ends should butt up against the 'shoulder' in the coupling

result of proper installation: SMOOTH INTEGRAL BORE



any 'issues' you have from improper installation would be depend on pitch and 'liquid' being transported

cut out another piece. cut a piece 1 inch longer than it.
use the longer piece and two couplings

I think he is talking about the thick rubber Fernco couplings that do not have a shoulder or stop in the middle. The PROFLEX one is for above ground applications only according to the manufacturer.

i only used it to show the principle of 'smooth integral bore'
