Hi- To add additional info to the title, I have a 2 handle tub spout that for some reason that I'm hoping can be answered here, goes on after the main line is shut off and then is turned back on. It's always the left hot water handle that turns itself on. Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks. Oh, one other detail that I'm not sure is relevant is that it supplies a tub with Jacuzzi jets. Try tightening the packing nut

Thanks for your reply but I don't have a leak at the handle. The handle is closed without any leaks but when I turn the main water line back on the left handle actually fully turns on by itself.

My thinking was that if the packing nut is loose you would have your existing condition. Try it if you are able.

Yes, it does.

The left lever is in the 9 o'clock position when closed and in the 6 o'clock position when open. I was just told by a plumber that the person who installed them did so incorrectly and the left lever should be changed to the 3 o'clock position when closed and the 12 o'clock position when opened and thar did the trick. So when closed the levers are facing eachother as opposed to facing away from eachother and creating the problem.

For a wall mounted faucet, the hot handle should be closed at 9 and open at 12. The cold should be closed at 3 and open at 12(they rotate in opposite directions to open). The hot and cold stems for lever handled faucets are usually not the same, due to their opposite rotation.

Yes I understand that, Unfortunately the person who installed it over ten yrs ago apparently did so incorrectly. The solution that seems to work is definitely not the ideal one but it works in this case. I haven't received any answers on how to pack the levers.

Have you read the thread? I've mentioned it several times.

You have not mentioned the direction of open rotation of the cold several times. If the cold opens with clockwise rotation and the hot opens counterclockwise, swap stem locations.

You have to interchange the hot and cold cartridges so the handles rotate upwards to turn off. The handles are too heavy and when the water pressure is turned off the weight of the handles causes them to drop down and turn on the hot water. The cold rotates the opposite way so it already closed and thus is not affected.

However, you will find that the majority of manufacturers WILL install stems that match the almost "universal" 'rule that hot handles rotate CCW to open even for wall mount tub/shower faucets.

NOT a very experienced or smart plumber. AND, few customers would be happy with handles pointing towards each other.

The problem was the manufacturer, NOT the installer, who just installed it the way it was made. BUT, the installer SHOULD have interchanged the stems when he installed it.

valve is OFF

hot side opens by LIFTING/ROTATING clockwise

cold side opens by LIFTING/ROTATING counter-clockwise



If your valve operates backwards SOMETIMES the cartridges are interchangeable, sometimes not.
