I had a tub replaced with a shower and now the water doesn't drain from the shower, If we use the washing machine, the water backs up in the shower and in the other tub. If I shower in the master bath, water leaks from under my toilet and in my closet. The guy who installed says it's something in the main pipes however,it didn't do this before. Any ideas what went wrong?

It definitely sounds like a back up in the main if your having issues throughout the house in more than 1 bathroom

AND an improperly set toilet (should NOT leak from base)
PROBABLY some debris went down the drain with the new 'upgrade' work causing a partial stoppage 'somewhere'
ps. where you previously had TWO fixtures (bath and shower) you now have only one - quite the 'upgrade'

very few people take baths now it seems. Have you not see Jim Gaffigan's joke about this?
Having a larger space to shower does seem to be an upgrade and it's what the people having the money want.
It has taken 5 years of doing business that now I no longer care what is done during the remodel as long as I am capable, it doesn't leak and I get paid. I used to frown about people choosing a chrome finish! what the heck do I care and I'm certainly not a designer. lol

It is time to get a camera into this drain line to find out what is causing this back-up.
And either have the drain jetted, cabled, or cut out and replaced.

@ NP16,
The issue I have with these conversions is that 'sometimes' they render the home NON code compliant.
'Many' newer homes are built with one full bath and one shower only bath.
If the full bath is 'upgraded' to shower only then the home no longer has ANY bath in violation of code.
Especially amongst the aged a 'sitz bath' oftem becomes a medical necessity which should/can not WAIT for a FURTHER remodel.
I have seen the disastrous results at the 'point of sale' where a savvy buyer brings up the issue AT CLOSING.
The typical consumer/homeowner is totally clueless about these issues.

Bern, can you state a jurisdiction that requires a "bathtub" and not a "bathtub or shower"?

steve,
my knowledge[sic] is circa 2004 when i retired
NYC
HOWEVER
it is apparently OK to NOT have a bathtub but merely shower(s)
(regardless of how stupid an idea)
