Is Flexiable Accordian Pipe allowed to be used inside a wall for a vent pipe.
Author: brotherslovecarpentry (CO)

Hello, I am wishing to know if flexiable accordian pipe is allowed to be used inside of a wall as part of a vent pipe. The specific application is we installed new pex and delta shower controls. A section of the bathtub plumbing vent had to be removed to allow for the shower controls to be installed center of the tub. The reasonn the old controls worked in the previous location is that they were mobile home shower controls that took up less space.
The vent pipe is abs so a trap adapter was installed on each end of the cut pipe with a flexiable accordian pipe used to connect the two. The flexiable accordian pipe wiggles around the shower controls gently. I am wishing to know if this is up to IRC code and/ or IPC code. If is is not up to code, as a alternative is it up to code to use flexiable PVC with a furnco to connect to each end of the ABS. Last option I see is to re direct the Pex line and have a straight ABS pipe.
I Greatly appreciate your help.
God Bless You

no, it is NOT permissable

you 'could' use a flexible piece of PVC but would need 'shielded couplings' (possibly mfg by FERNCO), NOT 'fernco rubbers'

BUT

for the work involved and if the wall is open:

reroute the PEX and make the ABS 'straight'

All piping in a drainage system including vents must be rigid and not have sag or bellies this would include vertical and horizontal piping

I think he mentioned the Delta shower valve is the reason the ABS vent cannot run straight up like it used to because the new valve is deeper.

Cannot see your picture. How to show images: [www.plbg.com]

You can do a 45 connection so it runs up at an offset then do another 45 to get back to it again, basically use four 45 degree elbows.

Yes not code what you did but it is a clever idea and outside the box.
My concern would be that it is air and water tight.
Always a variable when installing a shower valve that there is a vent in the way.
Venting should be reworked before new valve goes in. 1/2" PEX can fit between wall and 1-1/2" SCH 40 pipe.
Another option would be to install an AAV, as long as back side of shower wall had access cover to AAV.
