Installing an alcove-style tub above the floor
Author: ArthurPeabody (NM) I want to install a tub 6" above the floor - the same as the tub I'm replacing. The manufacturer says I can't with his tub, but why can't I build a platform, say with 4x6s coated with sealant, that undergird the support pad that is supposed to rest on the floor?

Author: steve (CA) You can, as long as you fully support everywhere the manufacturer wants support if it was installed conventionally.

Author: hj (AZ) Or the tub fails because of the way it was installed. Build a solid platform and set the tub on it.

Author: ArthurPeabody (NM) I guessed that too, but they recommend their shorter tubs for installation above the floor. They even have a phrase, 'Above floor rough-in', AFR, for those models. Those lack support pads.

Author: ArthurPeabody (NM) Because I'm installing it on the second floor and it's perpendicular to the joists, I want to spread the weight across as many as I can, so I'll put it on 2 6x6s that run the tub's entire length; the pad is 1' wide so those will undergird all but 1 inch of it; maybe I'll fill that in with a 1x6.
