I installed a washing machine, plumbed the water supply, clamped a piece of vinyl tubing to the drain, run that to the toilet to get it really clean and a second use out of the water.

Eventually I'll plumb its drain. I have a few feet between the outlet box and drain pipe. Physically I could place the trap near the box or near the drain pipe. Is there a reason to do one or the other? I'd guess low, off-hand.

A standard code minimum length of the standpipe(vertical inlet pipe to the trap) is 18" and the maximum length varies between 30" and 42". You need to check what your local code has as a maximum. I would use maximum length when possible, so you get an extra little reservoir space before it spill out if the drain is restricted.

What "second use of the water" do you get by running it to the toilet? Are you going to use the toilet While the machine is draining? Otherwise, all up area doing is draining the water to a different trap.

i 'believe' the OP is referring to dumping the SOAPY wash water into the bowl in the hope that the residual detergent will keep the bowl clean(er)

too hot water will crack the porcelain bowl.

Few people even use hot water any more.

The laundry room shares a wall with the bathroom; the toilet and the washing machine are on the same end of that wall, different sides, so the most convenient place to channel wash water is into the toilet. 'Cause I haven't finished the plumbing the wall on the bathroom side isn't even there. I'd really love to get the PVC wallboard professionals use but I can't just buy it in a store. I got an estimate for enough to renovate my kitchen: it was thousands, including $400 shipping - I used drywall, as little as I like that.

I haven't even turned on the hot water faucet of the washing machine outlet box.

An incidental benefit is that I see that I've been using too much detergent. Even the last rinse water is sudsy, even when I forgot the detergent once. My old top loader's gear case seized up 2 years ago. I bought a new, better, front-loader for the same price as a replacement gear case. I didn't know how much more efficient these new machines are.
