I live on the ground level of a three-story condo that was built in the early 80s. Ever since I moved in, I've been hearing constant water trickling from my toilet area. By the sound of it, it's not hitting any hard surface, it just keeps on trickling/dripping. I had a maintenance guy have a look at my toilet, but he said he didn't notice anything wrong with the tank and it sounded like the noise was coming from behind the wall.

Whenever my upstairs neighbor flushes, it sounds like a loud waterfall and the trickling sound disappears for about 30 seconds or sometimes a minute, and then resumes. This has been going on for at least 2 months and I don't notice any leak around the wall, no dark spot, no wet spot, no paint peeling off.

Since the water bill is paid by the association, there's no way for me to tell if it's us or the neighbor. Living with the noise is annoying, but I'm more worried that something might be broken behind the wall and will lead to a bigger problem later. Does it sound like the neighbor's toilet issue? Or is my pipe leaking?

I think one of the upstairs toilets is seeping water into the vertical drain stack and you are hearing it dripping down.

Try to figure out which toilet upstairs is leaking. Then tell the association you've discovered a water leak that could be costing thousands of gallons per month. Let them know the fix is inexpensive (most likely just a new flapper.
