new tub drain kit installation - questions
Author: corbine11 (IL)

I installed a new tub drain due to cosmetics reasons and followed all the youtube instructions such as replacing gasket, applying a pencil thick worth of plumber putty to the new tub drain assembly (not threads) and install it with a husky tub tool. I hand tighten it until I couldnt any more and gave it a few spins just for peace of mind. After thinking about it the gasket sat fine butwas 3/32 thickness DANCO, and I wondered if that will be suffice to prevent leaks etc. I didn't think to measure the previous gasket I removed...

I've never measured a shoe gasket and don't see a reason that I would ever need to.

The actual waterproof seal is the putty not the gasket

NO NO NO NO NO

the actual seal is the GASKET

the putty is a throwback to porcelain sinks and enamelled cast iron fixtures

the putty was to PROTECT the 'finish'

if the putty IS making the seal then the gasket is installed incorrectly OR the fixture itself is 'deformed'

however

the putty does serve as 'peace of mind' insurance

I disagree I’ve seen the rubber washers squeeze out of place and not leak for 10 in some cases 20 years

correct

but

in that case the gasket is/was NOT installed properly

like having a ruptured membrane in a shower with a bead of calk on top to 'seal'
