 KOHLER RITE-TEMP VALVE w/DIVERTER - PART 11748-K-NA
Author: AIDAN DOWNEY (CA)

I AM A HOMEOWNER, NOT A PLUMBER. RECENT 2 BATHROOM REMODEL. AT THE MASTER BATHROOM: TUB REMOVED, NOW A SHOWER w/HANDSHOWER. TURN ON SHOWER TO MAX HOT (105 - 113 DEG.) AFTER ABOUT 1 - 2 MINUTES THE DIVERTER POPS OUT TO TURN THE SHOWER OFF. PUSH THE DIVERTER BACK IN AND IT USUALLY HAPPENS AGAIN. REPORTED PROBLEM TO KOHLER, KOHLER HAS SENT REPLACEMENT PARTS & PLUMBER HAS REPLACED BOTH THE DIVERTER AND CARTRIDGE. PROBLEM STILL OCCURING. KOHLER CLAIMS THAT THIS MUST BE A PRESSURE IMBALANCE BETWEEN HOT AND COLD > 5 PSI. HAVE PUT PRESSURE GAGUES ON BOTH HOT AND COLD WATER SYSTEMS. ON COLD HOSE BIB IS 70 PSI AND AT HOT WATER HOSE BIB IS 60 PSI. GAUGES ARE AT SAME ELEVATION. (WHY WOULD PRESSURE BE DIFFERENT?) ALSO INSTALLED A GRAFF PRESSURE BALANCING VALVE (G-7030-LM45S) WITHOUT DIVERTER (IT'S JUST A SHOWER, NO TUB, NO HANDSHOWER) AND DON'T HAVE ANY PROBLEM. FYI: ONE MASTER PRESSURE REDUCTER ON COLD WATER SUPPLY, NO WATER SOFTNER.

ANY SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE HELPFULL AS BOTH KOHLER AND THE PLUMBER ARE NOT BEING HELPFULL.

AIDAN DOWNEY, EL CAJON, CA.

By design, does the diverter automatically open to the tub spout when water is shut off? Were the water pressures checked as the diverter decided to shut off the shower?

There can be a pressure reduction at the water heater, due to heat trap nipples or rusting dielectric unions.

WHEN THE DIVERTER POPS OUT IT JUST SHUTS OFF THE SHOWER. THERE IS NO MORE TUB SPOUT. THERE IS A VALVE AT THE HANDSHOWER. YOU HAVE TO OPERATE THAT VALVE TO USE THE HANDSHOWER.

I WILL BE MONITORING THIS MORE AND OBSERVING THE COLD AND HOT WATER PRESSURE WHEN THIS PROBLEM OCCURS.

I'LL ASK THE PLUMBER IF THERE ARE ANY HEAT TRAP NIPPLES OR RUSTING DI-ELECTRIC UNIONS THAT ARE POSSIBLY CAUSING A PRESSURE DROP.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR REPLY.

I'm sorry, I missed the mention of tub conversion. Can the diverter be modified, by removal of an internal washer/seal to keep the water flowing to the shower head, regardless of the diverter's position?

1/2 the modification was completed

tub removed -> now replace the 'faucet' to match the new fixture

OR

install a 'tempering' tub spout down low to adjust the temp BEFORE you activate the shower
