Fridge won't dispense water until I turn on kitchen faucet
Author: janeybgood (RI)

Our fridge makes this weird humming sound sometimes when I try to get water. Hum=no water. When it does this, all I have to do is quickly turn on and off the kitchen faucet and then it works. When I turn on the kitchen faucet, it seems as if there is more pressure than usual (this is how I discovered the connection between the two). Then, once I turn on and off the kitchen faucet, the fridge water works fine for days...until it happens again. This started happening after we had a plumber come in and fix a leak in our bathroom sink and toilet. Coincidence? How in the world does this happen?

? co-incidence ?

possibly, but, not the plumber's fault

possibility: some debris washed loosed and is stuck in the fridge's solenoid valve (there 'may' be a cleanable screen)

possibility: the solenoid valve needs replacement

remove solenoid valve with water supply attached and 'bench test' using a bucket

My guess: Because of the leak, the pressure could never get beyond some threshold, below the supplier's system pressure. When the plumber fixed the leak, the system pressure increased, and the solenoid valve has a defect that keeps it from opening if the pressure is too high.

If your house has a PRV, Pressure Reducing Valve, have it checked to ensure it is within spec. If the PRV is working correctly, replace the solenoid valve.
