Hot tight for toilet tank bolts?
Author: Tom the Elder (CA)

Installing my replacement toilet bowl went well (thanks bernabeu!). Yesterday I finally got around to installing the tank (no rush on this job) using a Korky repair kit for all of the replacable parts. I tightened the tank bolts until they seemed snug but the tank rocks easily. I used my upper body weight to push down on the tank while my son tightened the bolts further. I checked tightness myself and they seem quite snug - but clearly could be tightened further. And the tank still rocks forward and back. The gap between bowl and tank is about 1/2 inch, which is about the same as my other toilets. The only differences I can tell between them and the new installation is that the other tanks have a distincly backward lean, while the new one leans only a bit, and the other two will rock only slightly. If it makes any difference, the toilet is American Standard with the inside of the lid stamped "DE015", "F 4049 116", and "C66." I would be very surprised if it leaks, so is it OK as is? If not, do I just keep tightening until the rocking stops or the tanks cracks, or is there something else I should do? Thanks.

'assuming' a proper tank AND a proper gasket one tightens the bolts juuuust until the gasket compresses enough to allow china to china contact .. any more and THEN it may crack

filling the tank to the overflow adds 20 - 30 # and helps somewhat (1 gal = 8.3 #)

make certain the bolts are 'pulled down' evenly - take your time, use good lighting, and LOOK hard

Bernabeu, I replaced the flush valve that came with the Korky kit with one by Everbuilt that has a gasket that is was about 3/8-inch shorter. As soon as I sat the tank on I could tell it was going to work better. I followed the procedure you recommended - easy peasy and the toilet is back in use. Thanks for the help.
