 Peppermint oil for leaks
Author: ericsarratt (NC)

I read online (Hunker) about identifying leaks in the stack vent by smell.

Has anyone does this and does it work well?

You close all the windows of the home and have a person inside.

A second person pours 2oz of peppermint oil down the stack followed by 10qt of hot water.

The inside person now smells near all fixtures.

I am aware of smoke tests; I wanted to know if anyone had any experience with this method and if it works well.

Are there sewer flies present or sewage smell in a particular spot in the house, just because you can smell peppermint or see smoke doesn't tell you where a pipe is compromised unless it is exposed, maybe try getting a video inspection

I haven't done the test yet, but the more I read and watch youtube it looks like the smoke test is the way to go.

If the smoke test does not reveal obvious leaks I will run a camera.

It works. the reason you need two people is that the person on the roof who pours the peppermint will both smell of peppermint and also have their noses overwhelmed by peppermint. So you need an uncontaminated sniffer.

The peppermint oil test is cheap, fast and it works. We located a crack in the drain behind the cabinets within two feet. Or I should say our designated sniffer did.
