I took apart my tub drain and replaced the gasket. The basket didn't have cross bars so I tapped it out with a hammer and screwdriver. It had two notches on opposite sides above where the threads start so I put the screwdriver there. Now my question is how best to tighten it up. The hammer and screwdriver slip (maybe this was done a few times before and the notches aren't as sharp going clockwise.) A drain key costs about $30 and doesn't get rave reviews, but that's possibly because most users are trying to remove drains. Is it worth the money?

when you buy a new tub drain assembly that has no cross hairs in the tub flange but rather has those two little slots, the manufacturer sends a small rectangular piece of steel that sets right down into the slots and you turn it with a plyers.

I'll find a scrap and make one. I will drill a hole in it to stick a screwdriver in for leverage. I don't think I"m strong enough to do it with pliers. I'll let you know if it works. Thanks for answering.
