Meter triangle turning, but counter stayed same
Author: Lois - TX (TX)

The house suffered many leaks due to recent storms here in Texas. We believe all cold leaks have been found in and hot water is turned off at this time. Cold water and shower seem to have air in lines so I worried a new pipe might have busted. Plumber since said since cold lines have been on last night and today that if there was gonna be a leak we would’ve found it by now however the plumber told me to go out to the meter and see if the triangle with moving and it is moving slowly right and then slowly left and then believe it went back slowly right again it’s hard to see in the meter. So I did a meter count test as well at 3 o’clock then at 5 o’clock and purposely did not use any water during that time and counter did not change any.
Plumber says that the little triangle going left and right is pressure in the lines and then I am OK but when you Google it it says if the little triangles moving that means a leak so I’m not sure which is correct.
Please help thank you.

My google search starts with this - "Most meters also have a small "leak detector" arrow, triangle or star which spins to record the low volume of water use that is common with leaks. ... In some cases the leak detector dial might move back and forth very slightly - this is usually caused by water pressure fluctuations and is not a sign of a leak."

have you tried the reverse by putting a five gallon bucket under a hose bibb and fill it up and note the counter if it shows a difference of 5 before and after? Just to see if the counter is counting accurately during controlled usages?

The little triangle or diamond measures very low water flow ( like a dribble). It takes many gallons to get the numbers to change.
