White efflorescence on cast iron

A question I forgot to ask in my post earlier today about my toilet flange. As seen in the accompanying photo of the interior of the 70 year old cast iron sewer pipe, there is a spot of white material on the pipe. My best guess is that, during the seveal months this toilet was not in use, there might have been a slow drip. That could have resulted in build up of calcium carbonate from our hard water.

Is there anything else that might cause something like this on cast iron pipe? Thanks.
