 Can I unscrew this nipple?
Author: SlimTim (DE)

I'm a DIYer, debating whether to call in a pro. Installing a pedestal sink, which interferes with the existing angle stops - the stops need to move about an inch closer to the wall. The stops are on 3/8 chrome-plated (presumably brass?) nipples. See photo link.

The house was built in 1956, and has all copper plumbing (that I can see).

So, my question: if I unscrew these nipples, what are the odds they will simply unscrew, and I can install new, shorter chrome-plated brass nipples, and I'll be happy? (vs the alternative, they will break in the fitting, or the fitting will break, and I'll have a job on my hands that I can't handle...).

On a related note, if I do go ahead, I understand I should use PTFE tape plus dope for both ends of the nipple?

Thanks for any advice/predictions!

on a scale of 1 to 10, yours is a 9.9 success rate.

stainless steel nipples (if available) are just as good and quite a bit cheaper.

35 years I have never bought...never heard someone at the supply house ask for them. I've always used chrome plated brass nipples.

Packy, I'm just saying I've never seen any Plumber order them...I know they exist. It could be a north shore thing.

If the risers in the wall are copper, there's a fair chance that when you try to unscrew the nipple, you could rip the copper X FIP elbow off the pipe. I've seen a few plumbers use wing ells in the wall, but not many.

wing ells for 1/2 done most of the time. but wing ells for 3/8 are pretty rare.
