 Plumbing Vent & Basement Bathroom
Author: chadw8080 (PA)

In Pittsburgh, PA Have a 1940 house with a Pittsburgh potty and sink in the unfinished basement. We are about to finish off the basement.

Existing pittsburgh potty is in front left corner of house. Existing plumbing stack for 2nd floor bathroom is in the rear left corner of the house. This stack runs from basement up to attic through roof. There is 27ft from the existing pittsburgh potty to the main sewer stack in the rear corner.

Basement has a laundry sink (no vent, no studor vent valve either) also has a laundry discharge drain for washer - again no vent or studor vent valve.

Kitchen sink and dishwasher has no vent - it uses a Studor vent valve. Also in 2nd floor bathroom the sink has a Studor vent valve.

Assuming the 2nd floor bath tub/shower and the toilet are vented to main plumbing stack going through roof.

So as you can see I have no true vent pipe going from basement to roof - thus why the previous owners had Studor vents installed.

Since we are finishing off the basement and want to install a new bathroom in the same location of where the existing sink and toilet are and a new laundry room, am I correct to assume that we absolutely need to install a new vent line from the basement all the way up through the exterior wall to the roof?

You should have a 4" vent penetrating the roof, as for basement bath you can run the vent pipe on the outside of the house, vent must be 10 feet from any functioning window or take it to the roof, it doesn't look pretty but saves time and money instead of removing and patching drywall

he has a full size stack thru the roof already.
what has to be done is to run a 2 inch vent from the new basement bathroom (possibly picking up the basement laundry vent as well) up thru a closet or in a corner all the way to the attic.
that vent will either be run thru the roof or tie into the existing vent stack.
