Toilet Brass Bolts
Author: rhock (NJ) I have a toilet that is about 25-30 years old. I recently noticed that the brass bolts are rusted. How long, I don't know. There are no leaks or issues with the toilet. Do I need to replace bolts now or when should I replace the bolts and wax ring?

Author: mr leak (CA) Straddle the toilet and see if you can gently rock it side to side if not leave things alone for now

Author: hj (AZ) Brass bolts do not rust. You should probably replace your steel bolts now with brass bolts.

Author: bsipps (PA) 30 yrs old, your not just replacing the bolts its gonna be the toilet supply line,possibly the supply valve and by then might as well get a new toilet just keep that in mind beforehand, but eventually the rusty bolts have to be replaced

Author: packy (MA) i'm with mr leak on this one. you have to realize that if the steel bolts and nuts are rusted that you have about 1 % chance they will unscrew. you will have to cut them off and risk damaging the toilet.

When you replace the bolts make sure you do it in the correct method. Inside of the tank just put one rubber washer, and outside of the tank put a metal washer and tighten the nut down. If you put a metal washer inside the tank it will leak. Personally I like to use a Wingnut on the outside of the toilet bowl 5/16".

Source for solid brass bolts, big box Orange store has stainless steel bolts not quite as nice because the head isn't as big but still very nice
See the picture on this link about the correct method of placing the bolts and the side the toilet tank. Many of the manufacturers even have the metal bolts inside the tank but don't do it
