We have a 1940's vintage single story house with a basement, I'm having a flushing problem with our upstairs toilet as follows. When the toilet is flushed the bowl fills quickly however it gurgles repeatedly as the water goes down. almost like it flushes 3-4 times. I've snaked the toilet several times, no obstruction in the drain, (I have a basement toilet that works fine).

I then suspected a clogged toilet vent pipe, went up on the roof and snaked it, (single vent on the roof), made no difference still had the same problem. Still seemed to me to be a venting issue, did a little research and read about the "wet vent". I think this is what I have, a shared vent for the bathroom sink and toilet, the sink isn't used and the drain was clogged, I snaked the sink drain and that improved the toilet flushing. Unfortunately about a week later the flushing problem returned, I snaked the sink drain again, numerous times and the toilet flushed fine for about a month, then the same flushing problem slowly returned.

Can anyone give me an idea as to why this is happening..???

I think your were correct. Many times the singe vent through the roof is a vent for the toilet. You can tell by opening up the wall. Hope this helps.

Did you snake just the toilet or did you also snake the drain pipe? I think you have a restricted drain pipe and not a vent issue.

I snaked the toilet drain out 25ft., I have a toilet in the basement that works fine, if there was an obstruction in the main drain I would think it would affect both toilet's..??
