 Problem threading new shower arm
Author: GCA727 (TX)

I just installed a new SharkBite drop elbow for a new shower installation. All went well until I attempted to trial-fit the new chrome shower arm. The problem is that the shower arm will only thread in about three turns before seriously tightening. Thinking I may have purchased a bad drop elbow or bad shower arm I went to HD & Lowe’s and did a trial fit with other parts including standard drop (not SharkBite)elbows with no success. So, I am left with threading a new shower arm into the drop elbow fitting only about 1/4 inch. FYI it can not be tightened beyond the minimal thread grab that I described. And yes, I tried Teflon tape only and pipe dope only with no additional threading. Thanks in advance for ideas and thoughts. Gary

i think 3 turns is OK.
there is not full pressure at that joint just a small amount of backpressure.
pipe dope not tape and look inside with flashlight when running.

Thanks, I agree that five turns is reasonable. I just can’t seem to make that happen. Tomorrow I am going to try and reach SharkBite customer service and see what they have to say.

I understand the lower pressure issue and three turns might hold, but once the wall is closed, it is closed. With so few threads grabbing it is difficult to stop small leaks. I just want the install to be 100% right.

it might be worth a trip to HD to buy a cheap 1/2 inch black nipple.
dope it up and see how many turns you get.
then you should know if it is the elbow or the shower arm.

That’s a good idea. Thanks
