We have been in our home almost 30 years and this is a new occurrence, which happened for the first time last night. We have double sinks in the master bathroom. My husband was brushing his teeth using the cold water tap and I turned on the cold water tap in my sink. A loud hammering sound occurred in the wall behind the sink I was using, the water in the faucets sputtered (as if the water had been off) then the cold water completely stopped flowing in both faucets. They work fine independently but the previously referenced now occurs every time the cold water is used at at the same time in both sinks. This only happens with the cold water, not the hot. Oh, and no other water was being used in the house. Thanks!

either a screw holding a washer has come loose, or a piece of a washer has come loose or some other debris has blocked a passage inside a shut off.
in other words something loose has gotten where it should have.
somebody has to trace the piping, find the shut off, shut the house main valve, take the valve apart and clear it.
