I recently changed a moen shower cartridge and now whenever i shut off the water in any room there is a knocking sound. It was never there before. what could I have done to make this happen? Thanks.

I assume it is a pressure balanced valve and balancing spool is malfunctioning. If so, and it is a Moentrol valve, you need a new balancer. IF it is a 1222 cartridge you may need to exchange it.

yes the valve is a positemp. The plumber put in 3 different cartridges to see if it was the cartridge but the knocking still occurred.

Were they oem MOEN cartridges or third party ones?

the first one put in was not moen. plumber put in another non moen and same problem with knocking. then he said he put in a moen (i can't verify, didn't see the package) and the same problem exists.
